Greenville Islamic Center and Masjid Greenville has been home of many Muslims throughout the years. In the 1980's,
Greenville saw a steadily increasing number of Muslims moving into the area, as
Greenville was becoming a center for engineering and technology. Up till this
point in time, Greenville had no place of worship for Muslims and the community
was becoming increasingly concerned about the need for Islamic education as
young Muslims were growing up. Within the homes of Muslim families, classes and
prayers were established and soon the increasing population of Muslims in the
late 1980's would outgrow these homes. Seeing this need, several committed
Muslims started to organize and come together with the goal of establishing a
Masjid that would be the center of the Muslim community and education in
Greenville. The Islamic Society of Greenville (ISG) was established in 1987
within a rented room in the building formerly known as "Danny's Antique Mall".
This room served as our Masjid for daily and Jumma prayers. In addition, Sunday
classes were held to teach the young and adult Muslims alike, the fundamentals
of Islam. This room would also be outgrown, and the ISG was searching for a larger building. Allah blessed the community in 1989, as the ISG was able to purchase a building off Wade Hampton Boulevard that would serve as the new Masjid for the community. The majority of the funds were raised within the community and this new Masjid would be the center of Muslims in Greenville until an arsonist cruelly burned down the building in 1996. Again with the help of Allah, the Muslims in the community persevered. In 1997, the present Masjid was rebuilt on the same land as the previous Masjid. Presently, the Muslim population within the Greenville areas is to be estimated at one thousand and two hundred and growing. It continues to be the center of the Islamic education, prayers, and community in the Upstate of South Carolina. |
